MALIBU, California — Residents looking to capture rainwater before the winter season can register for a free rain barrel pickup at Malibu City Hall on Saturday, November 14, 2026. The drive-through distribution is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. in the upper parking lot at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.
How the program works
The City of Malibu says it is partnering with the West Basin Municipal Water District to distribute rain barrels to eligible, pre-registered residents. The water district’s program offers up to two 50-gallon barrels per qualifying household, with the city listing an estimated value of $80 per barrel. Advance registration is required; quantities, eligibility rules and other restrictions apply.
Residents should review the official program requirements and register before traveling to City Hall. The city directs questions about registration to 310-371-4633. The environmental programs office can also be reached through the event listing.
Why it matters in the Malibu Hills
Rain barrels can collect runoff from roofs for later outdoor use, reducing demand on treated water and slowing some stormwater flow during rainfall. In hillside neighborhoods, practical water-conservation measures are especially relevant as residents prepare for the rainy season. Property owners should follow the water district’s installation and use instructions and should not assume that collected rainwater is safe to drink.
