Malibu residents can bring selected household hazardous waste, electronic waste and documents for shredding to a free drive-through collection at City Hall on Saturday, November 7. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the upper parking lot at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.

The City of Malibu says this is its final household hazardous waste and e-waste collection event of 2026. The date was rescheduled, so residents who saved an earlier calendar entry should confirm that they are planning for November 7.

What the event will accept

The city’s event page lists the following household materials:

  • Water-based paint
  • Used motor oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Automotive and household batteries
  • Unbroken compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Electronic waste

Containers must be clearly labeled so staff can identify their contents. The maximum amount of paint or motor oil accepted is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip. Event staff will remove accepted household hazardous waste and electronics from a vehicle trunk or pickup bed, and participants are strongly encouraged to remain in their vehicles.

Electronic-waste capacity is limited. The city recommends arriving early because e-waste intake may close once the available capacity is reached. Residents should not leave any material at City Hall after intake closes.

Document shredding limits

The drive-through event also accepts confidential household documents for shredding. The limit is five boxes, or five 13-gallon bags, per household. Examples listed by the city include tax forms, bank statements, pay stubs, checkbooks, insurance and medical information, legal files, utility bills, credit-card statements and offers, receipts, invoices and investment records.

Drivers will not be able to wait and watch the shredding bin. The city says the shredded material will be recycled. Before arriving, residents should remove items that do not need secure destruction and avoid mixing documents with household hazardous waste.

How to prepare before driving to City Hall

  • Place accepted waste in the trunk or pickup bed, away from passengers.
  • Keep products in their original containers when possible and make sure every container is closed and labeled.
  • Do not combine different chemicals in a single container.
  • Separate electronics, liquids and documents so staff can unload them safely.
  • Arrive well before 2 p.m.; limited e-waste capacity may fill earlier.
  • Check the city event page on the morning of November 7 for any weather or operational update.

The city lists the event as free. Questions can be directed to Malibu’s Environmental Programs staff at 310-456-2489, extension 389. Future 2027 collection dates are expected to be posted on the city’s environmental calendar.
